Diet can play a very big role in helping people with diabetes control their weight. There are a lot of different kinds of diets that can benefit people with diabetes and can improve overall health. In terms of weight loss, some of the most popular diets that help people with type 2 diabetes lose weight include a vegetarian diet, DASH [Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension] diet, Atkins diet, Weight Watchers diet, and the Zone diet. This study specifically looked at a diet that uses liquid meal replacements (such as SlimFast and Glucerna SR shakes) and found that it helped people with type 2 diabetes lose weight.
When overweight and obese people with type 2 diabetes drank a shake instead of eating a meal, they lost weight. In fact, people with diabetes using shakes as meal replacements lost more weight than those following a more traditional low-calorie diet. Also, the group drinking shakes lowered their body mass index and their blood pressure. There were other small improvements in body fat, waist circumference, A1c level, fasting blood glucose, and fasting insulin as well.
So, how does this work? These liquid meal replacements are a mix of carbohydrates, fat, and protein, along with other vitamins and minerals. These shakes can be used to replace one or two main meals each day in addition to eating fruits, vegetables, and nuts to make sure you are getting enough calories. This study shows that this is another tool for people with diabetes to help them achieve their weight loss goals. In fact, the American Diabetes Association includes recommendations for the use of meal replacements in order to manage diabetes; however, more research studies are needed. In conclusion, liquid meal replacements definitely have a place in jumpstarting weight loss and improving health for Latinos and others living with diabetes.
